Old friends are gold

More like home

Me: Hola! [I’m trying to get in touch with someone at Columbia University and] I wanted to know if you maybe knew someone in this department or had someone I could possibly speak to?
Mrs. Friends-Around-the-Way: I do not know [the person] but I can write the dean of SPS.
Me: Goodness.
MrsFAW: Anything to see [the kid] as a Lion (no offense to Cornell)
Me: None taken!

I’m working on a project, and I needed to get in touch with someone at Columbia.

One of my Friends-Around-the-Way is actually on the board and friends with several people including the Dean of the school I needed to get in touch with, evidently.

I literally got an email back two hours later.

It pays to have old friends.

So, to thank them, I took them out to eat at The Ribbon and managed to catch up some.

Me: So, what’s it like to have two adult children?
MrFAW: (scoffs) “Adult”
MrsFAW: [Our oldest] moved into a three-bedroom with friends downtown. The rooms are so small, it feels like you can put your arms out and touch the walls.
Sara: Well, we’ve all had that.
Me: Man, I knew her when she was the size of a peanut.
MrsFAW: She wants to decorate and I’m wondering how anything will fit.
Me: (later) I think I’ve known you 24 years?
MrFAW: Actually, I just celebrated 25 years at [the company we both used to work at].
Me: Man, quarter-century…doesn’t even feel that long ago.

As I get older, I’m reminded of that poem that goes:

Make new friends, but keep the old;
One is silver, and the other gold.

That’s as true a saying as it gets.

Oh, the kid’s back.

Went out to the wilds of NJ the other day to get him.

Him: I’m home! I’m gonna sleep in my own bed!
Me: Yes, you are. Welcome home, kiddo.

It feels more like home when he’s around.
